    maxmermer and betauser-

Yes, the luggage racks on the roof of the blue GAZ M24 was definitely one of the reasons I chose to continue my search. I'm not a fan of them even on SUVs! Around Austin canoeing is a popular sport. I tend to get nervous riding behind an SUV with their canoes strapped to the top, thinking that one of them could come loose and become an unwanted airborne missile headed in my direction. I certainly wouldn't want a rack on any sedan, let alone my Volga!

    Thanks,
    Jerry

SEARCHING FOR A VOLGA: ON THE HUNT (cont.)

After the aforementioned initial flurry of activity came the expected lull, waiting on new possibiles to roll in from my contacts; all the while checking http://www.auto.ru everyday for any new vehicles that seemed worthy of further investigation. It was about this point that things became quite busy in my Moscow contact's life and so things pretty much went silent on that end. I of course understood; that contact had my support until things cleared up. In the meantime, the team in Togliatti found an M24 locally that they offered for my consideration.

It was a cream colored 1978 GAZ M24 for which the seller wanted 55,000 Rubles. In looking at the pictures that my contacts sent to me I could tell without difficulty that the vehicle wasn't worth their asking price nor was it anything I would be interested in pursuing. It had obviously been painted, as the front shade of cream/beige was different from the back shade of cream/beige, beginning at the door jamb. It seemed either obvious or strongly possible that it had been in an accident and even in the best case scenario it was a horrible paint job. My technical contact in Togliatti previewed it for me. The report stated that it drove ok but that the engine had a couple of leaks and there was rust in the front fender wells and all along the passenger side. From looking at the photos that is what I would have guessed.

The long story short version is that I decided to continue searching. And I made that decision in short order. The seller of this Volga would eventually come back to me about 2 weeks later and offer a final sales price of 45,000 Rubles but naturally I declined that offer.

So the hunt continued. A few photos of the cream colored 1978 GAZ M24 follow. By the way, sorry for the delay in updating this thread. 'Been busy preparing to close on the house (currently scheduled for November 16th) and finishing the air conditioning work on one of my RX7s. I even recorded that work and put it on YouTube! Hah! I mention that because I plan to do something similar in the future ... but details on that must wait for now. ;-)

Thank you for reading. See you in the next installment.

SEARCHING FOR A VOLGA: ON THE HUNT (cont.)

Not too long after the 1978 M24 described in the previous posting, which I had dubbed "two tone Elena", my contacts in Togliatti sent me another GAZ M24 for consideration. This was a 1977 M24 that was located in Saratov, Russia, which was a considerable distance from Togliatti, but not so far that my contact would have been unwilling to go and take a look at it for me. It was white in color and had an advertised cost of 95,000 Rubles. Once I had given the pictures they sent to me a good once-over I couldn't understand how the sellers were justifying their asking price. I could see uneven-ness in the lines of the car, rust along the lower edge of the body on the passenger side, a few dents and dings, and finally what appeared to be the original paint still on the car. Now mind you, it was a 1977 M24 so that kind of stuff should be expected to some degree. Having said that it would have seemed more appropriate if the sales price was lower to reflect the vehicle's current condition. On the upside, the car had some of its original documentation (what appeared to be an owner's manual), the interior appeared to be in good overall condition, and it only had 55,000 km on the odometer. Those attributes were definitely positive aspects of this Volga.

So in an effort to be reasonable and objective, I decided that I would give it some thought. After a week or so of doing that I came to the conclusion that this vehicle, depending on how it ran, etc. was probably in ok shape considering its age and the life it had most likely lead. However, I decided that this M24 was simply a bit too far removed from the general principle with which I had begun my search. That principle being that I had wanted to find the "garaged cream puff" type of vehicle that had been given a protected, sheltered life. A Volga that had been well taken care of and never in an accident. "Remember that?" I would ask myself during my week-long internal debate. Funny how we as humans do that sometimes, isn't it?

Anyway, in the final analysis I just decided that this car didn't meet the "garaged cream puff" criteria. Sure, it might have been ok for a 1977 model, but not worth the price that the sellers were asking and therefore not even worth the time it would require for my contact to travel to Saratov to preview it even if it had been something that I was willing to consider. Besides I simply did not want to give in on my admittedly stringent requirements. I was willing to wait. "No rush" became the theme that I followed. And therefore I elected to continue my search. It would be a good choice, as time would demonstrate.

Photos of this 1977 GAZ M24 follow. I have decided to post several photos this time, seeing as how it's almost always fun and interesting to look at photos of Russian cars; I've also decided to spread the photos out over a few posts and not put them all in one.

Thank you for reading, catch you next time!

the previous trio looked a lot better, and the 55k kilometers looks a little suspicious on the Volga from Saratov
Jerry I understand you are looking for a mint car, but I think a car that is not perfect is a lot more fun to play with in the long run,
